Support for Immigrant and Refugee Students: Fostering a Safe and Inclusive Learning Environment in CA Pre K-12 Schools

Originally developed in 2017 in response to rising xenophobia and shifting immigration policies, this toolkit was created to help educators support undocumented students and those experiencing emotional stress due to the changing political climate.

The lessons are designed to:

• Build community and empathy in the classroom so students feel safe expressing their thoughts and emotions
• Engage students in literature-based discussions that explore key social-emotional themes relevant to their lived experiences

This resource offers practical, compassionate tools to foster trust, belonging, and resilience among all students.
